Submerged-arc welding is the process Parkway-Kew was founded on in 1952. Eugene Walter Klein welded the first test piece in a New Jersey garage with a hardfacing wear-resistant alloy and shortly after took the order for the first 100 26-inch Vaughn wire drawing blocks — for CF&I, in Roebling, New Jersey.
Seventy years later, submerged-arc is still the workhorse hardsurfacing process on the floor. Under the flux blanket the arc is stable, the deposit is deep and clean, and the resulting hardsurface layer bonds metallurgically with the base metal. PK-503 and PK-200 are the two standard chemistries.
